GOOJODOQ GD13 review

A great alternative to the second generation Apple Pencil with a four times lower price

As is well known, Apple makes fantastic devices, but it charges them a lot. In some cases, fortunately, there are equally valid alternatives at much lower prices, such as the GOOJODOQ GD13, which is an excellent alternative to the second-generation Apple Pencil.

At first glance the GD13 is virtually identical to Apple's original pen. Same shape, same size, and it also supports magnetic charging. It can therefore be attached to the iPad in order to recharge it when not needed. Compared to the Apple Pencil it is slightly lighter. The scope of delivery also provides a convenient carrying case which, to tell the truth, there is no need because I, for example, prefer to keep it connected to the tablet. A second spare nib is also provided should the first one get damaged. Installation is very simple: just turn it on and then connect from the iPad's Bluetooth settings.

As mentioned, the GD13 has the same dimensions as the Apple Pencil but there is one thing that differentiates it from an aesthetic point of view: the presence of the button in the upper part which is used to turn it on and off. Around the button there is also a led which, in addition to identifying when the pen is on, allows you to monitor the state of charge: the green light indicates that the charge is full, the blue means that there is an intermediate recharge from 20 to 70%, when the LED is red it means that the charge is less than 20%.

The GD13 does not have a touch-sensitive button on the side that allows you to enable some functions such as the Apple Pencil. Let's say that this is one of the few shortcomings of this nib. From the point of view of practicality, however, it is practically the same. Just select any application where you can write or draw and start using it. You can, therefore, use it normally as if you were using the original one.

The GD13 supports pen tilt detection. In practice, when you hold the pen perpendicular to the screen, the stroke is more decisive. By tilting it, on the other hand, you can make a wider and more nuanced stroke. It does not support pressure levels. So when you use it over a graphics application to draw, you don't get the same feedback as the Apple Pencil. You can't blend strokes like a pencil on real drawing paper. You have to take advantage of the system that detects the tilt of the pen a little, but you can't emulate the same drawing experience that you can try with the Apple Pencil.

If, on the other hand, you want to use it to make quick sketches, to take notes or even to select applications on the screen, from that point of view we say that it is practically perfect. With the GD13 then you can also use some fast features such as, for example, the quick opening of the Notes application by dragging the stylus from the lower right corner towards the center, or the possibility of taking a quick screenshot by dragging the stylus from 'bottom left corner towards the center.

The GOOJODOQ GD13, therefore, is an excellent alternative to the Apple Pencil and is ideal for those who want a stylus to use with the iPad but do not want to spend dizzying sums.
